The gospel in hymns: background and interpretation
This book is a look at the history of the church in English speaking lands since the break with Rome through the lens of the evolution of the English language hymns. Written in 1950, it focuses upon those hymns that were common to the ten most common hymnals then in use by the Protestant churches of North America. The book uses the evolution in the style of those hymns to present the history of the church.
It begins with the Metrical Psalms that formed the basis of English hymnody after the break with Rome and continues with the evolution of English hymns and the English-language church until it reaches the period of the Oxford movement when it became acceptable again to look outside the English tradition for hymns. It then goes back to look at those hymns translated into English from Latin, Greek, German, and other languages with a brief look at the history of the Catholic, Orthodox, and European Protestant churches. The book then resumes its survey through the remainder of the history of British hymnody before concluding with a look through American hymnody.
