This first volume of Latourette's history of Christianity is a good introduction to the topic of Church History. It is a bit dated as it was first published in 1953, but nevertheless it will reward the time taken to read the book. The history covered begins with Jesus himself and the emergence of the early Church within its Judaic and Greco-Roman context and progresses up to the time of the Reformation. Along the way, he devotes some time to the Byzantine Empire, but spends most of his time tracking the progress of the Western Church.
