Christ & Israel: an interpretation of Romans 9-11
Introductory remarks treat generl matters about Romans- the letter as a manifesto of faith, the circumstances of its writing, the theological problem of the unbelief of the Jews. The balance of the book is a section-by-section analysis of chapters 9-11. In a readable fashion, the author sets forth his interpretation together with helpful reviews of related biblical, intertestamental, apocryphal, and patristic problems, and with iluminating discussions of alternative viewpoints. There are three excursuses: on Israel as a presecutor of the early Christians; the idea of the "remnant" in the Bible; and the image of the cultivated and wild olive tress.
