This book, along with everything else Schmithals has written, is an important contribution to the origin of "apostle." Here, Schmithals argues that the orthodox Christian view of "apostle" is not based on New Testament exegesis; that the origin of "apostle" is rather obscure and probably comes from the Gnostics.
