The Oxford martyrs: lecturer on modern history
The story of the Oxford martyrs has been told many times, in general histories of the English reformation, and in biographies of the principal participants.
The author intention is to examine that conflict, particulary in its acutest form, during the reign of Queen Mary. These five years, from 1553 to 1558, were the crisis years of English protestantism
The main theme of this conflict was authority, because the distinctiveness of the English church lay, and was to loe, not nos much in its theology as in its relationship to the Crownd and the secular community.
