The Christian world: a social and cultural history
The book features numerous illustrations: mostly in black in white when accompanying text, while nice color plates are dispersed in-between chapters. Focuses on the social history of Christianity and the impact of the religion on society throughout time.
Chapters include: Christianity in the Roman Empire, The Rise of Christian Art, The Conversion of the Barbarian Peoples, The Greek Church and the Peoples of Eastern Europe, Medieval Christendom, Popular Religious Movements in the Middle Ages, The Age of Reformation, The Social Impact of Puritanism, Religion in the Age of Baroque, Christianity and Industrial Society, Religion at the Grass Roots, Christianity in the Contemporary World.
Each chapter is written by a different author; the text is pretty straightforward and informative with chapters pretty much in chronological order. Even though it could serve as a college textbook, it is a great addition to any library for an amazing price.
