This 1965 book is a translation of the tenth edition of a German work originally initiated in 1910 by Ernst Sellin. Dr. Georg Fohrer [who, at the time, was professor of Old Testament at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany] completely rewrote and expanded the text, such that it more than doubled in size. He wrote in the Foreword, "In the year 1910, when the first edition of this [book] appeared, the author, Ernst Sellin, explained in his foreword why he had written a short, concise textbook and what he conceived its advantages to be...Leonhard Rost... suggested that I prepare the new edition... the greatly increased scope and different organization of the whole work... were unavoidable if it was to do justice to the present state of Old Testament studies and make a contribution to scholarship above and beyond mere elementary instruction."
