A plague of corn: the social history of pellagra
The late Dr. Roe was a true master of unfolding social history in such a way that we are completely engrossed in the story, even though it is full of (often complex) scientific information and socio-political backdrop. Her message -- crystallised on the final page of the book -- is powerful: that even if we now are able to cure diseases of malnutrion like pellagra with 'a handful of pills' (in this case niacin supplements, etc.), the REAL disease is a social one that will only be cured by a change in our attitudes towards our fellow man. A beautiful, compelling, comprehensive book that exemplifies how science, academia and social history MUST be woven together if we are to make anything meaningful from them.
