The author produced a masterpiece book about the nature and influence of Calvinism through the centuries. There was so much information about the topic in the book. He gave a lengthy introduction to the importance of Ulrich Zwingli and the Swiss Reformation. He went over the underrated role of scholars like Bucer, Bullinger, and Oecolampadius in perpetuating the Reformation in Europe. He gave an extended portait of Calvin's life and ministry. McNeill pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of Calvin in a fair and measured manner. He discussed his brilliant writing ability and scholastic excellence. He pointed out that Calvin was strict and austere and could be harsh with heretics. Calvin did press for the execution of Michael Severus.
