The believer's church
Durnbaugh skillfully, approachably and reliably reviews two thousand years of the history of Christianity to show that there is an almost continuous tradition of people who take Jesus' teaching and way of life seriously, who reject violence, who believe Christians should live simply and generously, who reject nationalism of any kind, and who prefer non-hierarchical church leadership. It's the Donatists, Waldensians, Moravians, Anabaptists, Mennonites, Quakers and various Brethren groups. And with all the great things one can note, Durnbaugh also helps us see the temptations and failures that often dog the tradition: perfectionism, sectarianism, withdrawal from broader social responsibility, arrogance, and so on. A great study for those both within and outside the free church tradition. There have been other similar studies but this is the best.
