The certain knowledge of self-identity is crucial for our sanity. And philosophical traditions as diverse as the Hindu nondualism of Sankara, the Christian philosophy of Augustine, and the modernism of Descartes are agreed that the affirmation of selfhood is the axiom which gives philosophy its points of departure.
