Edward Irving's incarnational Christology
A landmark study providing overwhelming and indisputable evidence that the heretical verdict levied against Edward Irving’s Christology in the 19th century was erroneous. Dorries extricates Irving from the hyper-Reformed excesses of his contemporaries and rightly places him within the foundations of historical orthodoxy in tandem with the likes of the early Greek Fathers and Protestant Reformers. Furthermore, a collateral consequence of this impressive study is to create awareness of Irving’s pioneering role in modeling what later would become known in scholarly circles as Spirit Christology. His bold recognition of the active role of the Holy Spirit in Christ’s sinlessness and His anointing of power laid the groundwork for the 20th century recovery within Christianity of Pentecostal gifts and manifestations. Dorries takes a significant step in restoring Irving’s legacy from decades of misunderstanding and neglect.
