Eretz Israel, the land of Israel, has usually been included within the sphere of influence of foreign cultures. These have affected, have even helped shape, the land's indigenous cultural experiences and traditions, including those of the Jews. Judaism was often in conflict with these cultures, a conflict which peaked during the Hellenistic-Roman period, this war one of humanity's most productive and creative eras, encompassing numerous gripping historical episodes.
